Earlier today, Marvel’s Avengers fans spotted a curious line on the store page for the game’s PS4 version on UK retailer Base’s website. The detail, which has since been removed, revealed that Spider-Man is a playable character in the game, but only on PS4. It seems a little too close to release for a detail this major to have been hiding, but some nonetheless took it at face value. Base has since updated its Marvel’s Avengers PS4 listing to remove that line, telling IGN that it had been on the product page since E3 2019, and that it was not correct. Base further clarified that the line didn’t come from the game’s publisher or supplier. It’s worth keeping in mind that Spider-Man may still be coming to Marvel’s Avengers, whether as an exclusive character on PS4, or one that’s available to everyone. Of course, if and when that happens, Square Enix and Sony would be more than happy to tell you all about that partnership, if it exists. For now, Hawkeye remains the only confirmed post-launch character for Avengers. He’s one of four planned. In case you missed it, the first stage of the game’s beta kicks off on Friday on PS4, before it opens up to other platforms in the two weekends to follow. The beta, which developer Crystal Dynamics detailed last week, is chock full of content, featuring solo missions, co-op activities and multiple heroes to play.
Marvel’s Avengers releases September 4 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
