The news comes from a report published by DigiTimes. “The life cycle for household game consoles may be shortened to five years from 6-7 years, and PS5 shipments may challenge 120-170 million units when its 5-year cycle expires,” reads the report, which draws on sources from the PS5’s backend supply in Taiwan. “[This is] compared to 110 million units registered to date for PS4 launched in November 2013, the sources said, adding that Sony has recently boosted its PS5 shipment estimate for 2020 to near 10 million units,” the report continues....

August is nearly over and we still don’t have precise launch dates for either the Xbox Series X, or the PlayStation 5. Prices for either console have also yet to be revealed. Microsoft has already confirmed a November launch target for Series X, whereas Sony is sticking to the more nebulous holiday window for PS5. According to VGC, this may be because Microsoft intends to go first. VGC cites retail and development sources in saying that Xbox Series X will launch in the first week of November....

Update: Rainbow Six Parasite may not actually be the new name for Rainbow Six Quarantine. Ubisoft told PCGamesN that Parasite is simply an internal name for the upcoming co-op shooter, and not its final, official name. The publisher also explained that it recently hosted internal tests, which may explain why the Parasite name leaked in the first place. “We can confirm this is a glimpse of the upcoming game, and we will share more details, including the official name, soon,” Ubisoft added....

You start each game fumbling around its haunted houses - whether they’re extravagant mansions or museums that have been turned into police stations - and eventually you become so familiar with them that they feel like home. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has revealed that players are seemingly incredily excited about the upcoming expansion, noting that Shadowlands has out-performed every other expansion in the game’s long history when it comes to pre-sales. “We’ve seen unprecedented engagement trends since the [World of Warcraft] subscriber base doubled following the launch of Classic last year,” Kotick said (via PC Gamer). “Pre-sales of the upcoming Shadowlands expansion are the highest we’ve seen at this stage ahead of any release....

While it’s still a ways off, Netflix has announced a 3D animated series for Sonic the Hedgehog is in the works. It is being brought to you by the folks behind the Carmen Sandiego series on Netflix and Ben 10. The news was posted earlier on Twitter, but apparently, Netflix jumped the gun and pulled the tweet super fast. Yet, it wasn’t fast enough as Wario64 grabbed a screencap for posterity....

People with knowledge of Sony’s plans have told Bloomberg a PS5 event could be held as early as next week on June 3. The report states that plans could change and that other PS5 events could take place in the “coming weeks and months.” Sony is also not expected to reveal everything there is to know about the console during its first presentation. Earlier this month it was rumored that Sony would host a reveal of its PS5 games in June, and possibly also discuss details on the console....

The new DLC character, Haohmaru, was announced for Soulcalibur 6 in August and reconfirmed in November when Hilde was released for the game. This will be the second character to be released as part of Season Pass 2. Additional Samurai Shodown characters, Iroha and Sogetsu Kazama, will be released at a later date (thanks, Siliconera). Spiritfarer developer Thunder Lotus has issued a statement apologising for how one story in the game represented a disabled character. Gustav, a once wheelchair-bound bird mentions in one conversation how death freed them from their wheelchair. Kayla Whaley argued how this perpetuates a view that death can be better than living with a disability, something that is insensitive to disabled people who excel in spite of their disabilities. Thunder Lotus conceded that some of the writing is ableist, and promised to change it, and reexamine the game for any other material that may have similar ableist undertones....

Square Enix Presents will air on June 13 at 12:15 PT / 3:15pm ET / 8:15pm UK / 9:15pm CEST as a Keynote during the all-digital E3 2021 event, as well as on Square Enix’s official Twitch and YouTube channels. The stream will be about 40 minutes and include the world premiere of a new game from Eidos-Montreal, and an update on Babylon’s Fall from Platinum Games.
