I spent a good chunk of my time at EGX messing around with Squad Blast, and was fortunate enough to interview Anatolijs Ropotovs – CEO and founder of Ultrahorse – about the inspirations for the title, what the studio is hoping to achieve, and why it thinks players will hop over from some of the genre’s big hitters and try out this fresh, more 2D approach. Squad Blast is a team-based competitive shooter, where you and your partner set out to outsmart and outgun the enemy team within short, punchy objective-based matches....

According to the financials (thanks, GI.biz), only major releases such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Marvel’s Avengers provided an uptick in revenue for the first half of the year. While an uptick in revenue is always good, it doesn’t seem as though Marvel’s Avengers brought in as much revenue as the firm would have hoped. In the first half of the fiscal year when Final Fantasy 7 Remake released, the publisher’s games division reported ¥34....

Patch 3.16 is also bringing more PvE content to Star Citizen, including derelict ships players can explore for valuable rewards. These are dangerous-locations for courageous players who are able to manoeuvre plenty of booby traps to secure precious loot. “2021 has been another fantastic year for Star Citizen and our amazing community, and I’m excited for us to end the year with another explosive Dynamic Event in Alpha 3.16: Return to Jumptown,” said Star Citizen Creative Director Chris Roberts....

EA managed to squeeze in one more Star Wars game before this console generation ends. The new Star Wars: Squadrons was initially confirmed on Friday following a leak. Today, EA released the first Squadrons trailer, confirming an October 2 release date and a $40 price tag. The game is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One and it supports cross-play across all platforms. It will also be playable in VR on both PS4 and PC....

Nearly a month ago, Steam started breaking its all-time active user record with over 20 million concurrent. This would only be the start, as the platform has since exceeded that figure several times over the past few weeks. The most recent record was achieved over the weekend, with 24,535,923 concurrent users - a staggering number even by Steam’s standards. As coronavirus lockdowns continue worldwide, there’s a good chance the numbers could climb again....

Chopping down these trees with an axe gives you a couple of resources. Tree sap isn’t really useful at the start (but it’s worth putting in storage for later). Logs, however, immediately come in handy for making repairs around the farm. You can also refine logs into lumber using the Lumber Maker machine, which unlocks a lot of bigger and better crafting recipes down the line. Those looking forward to Streets of Rage 4 will be able to pick the game up on April 30, the developers announced today. Alongside the release date, a PvP Battle Mode was also announced for the game. In it, you will be able to select a character and brawl with 1-3 others across several modes. As shown in the trailer above, you can try out Battle Mode with SoR4 characters or pick from the complete roster of twelve retro characters once they are unlocked....

As part of Take-Two’s post-earnings call, where the publisher announced a record Q1 and strong revenue from its online games, the company was asked about its decision to price NBA 2K21 $70 on PS5 and Xbox Series X. CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that while it believes the price hike is long overdue, it doesn’t want to commit to $70 as the base price for all its games going forward. Prices, according to Zelnick, are set on a game-by-game basis....

This Hardmode boss can be summoned using a special crystal and you’ll need to prepare for a tough battle. She’s harder to beat than King Slime - the female of the species is more deadly than the male, after all. Before you can fight her, you’ll need to find a Gelatin Crystal then head to the Hallow Biome, as it’s the only place she can spawn, so let’s get started....

According to Sony, the team behind PS5 has made “significant efforts” to enable PS4 users to play their favorite games on the upcoming console. The company said the “overwhelming majority of the 4,000 plus PS4 titles will be playable” on the console. “We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions,” reads the post on the PS Blog....

IGN has gone live with the first look at gameplay from Neon Giant’s The Ascent. Announced earlier this week for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, the game is a single-player, co-op title set in a cyberpunk world that blends sci-fi elements. In it, you play as a worker who has been enslaved by The Ascent Group which owns “everything and everyone." One day while out on an assignment, the group, which is the largest mega-corporation on the planet, shuts down for unknown reasons, and all of sudden the automated security systems go a bit nuts....

I don’t know what it is about the top-down shooter genre that endears it to indie developers. There are too many of them - usually with a pixel-arty look, but simultaneously not enough - the kind that used to push visuals and environmental detail to the point that you’d want to hack in a first-person camera just to get as close as possible to their worlds. I would have been content with The Ascent being among the latter; it’s what I went in expecting....

Media Molecule’s Dreams started off as this seemingly unknowable, abstract thing. Only with the launch of the closed beta did it reveal its true nature as a powerful, accessible game engine. Now it’s properly out and the beta is well and truly over, the truth is clear: Dreams is LittleBigPlanet on growth hormone. Where Media Molecule’s cutesy platformer was restricted by its visual style, Dreams seemingly offers endless possibilities, allowing people to make games and movies in any genre with its tools, using both realistic and stylised visual designs....

The other is more manageable for most players and sees Nilou occupy a strong role as a Hydro damage dealer and reaction enabler. Nilou is an excellent pick for new players with no 5-star Hydro characters yet, but if you’re holding out for Nahida in the next update, you may want to give Nilou a bit more thought before throwing your Primogems at her. When is the Nilou banner release date?...

One of the most exciting announcements at last week’s The Game Awards 2020 ceremony was The Callisto Protocol, a new survival horror game from the makers of Dead Space. The third-person game is being developed at Striking Distance, a studio headed up by industry veteran and Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield. Striking Distance is, of course, a studio established by PUBG publisher PUBG Corp. in 2019 to work on games set in the PUBG universe....

This teaser for The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes comes ahead of a more in-depth look at the installment on May 27. On that day, the first look at gameplay will be revealed at 9am PT, 12pm ET, 5pm UK. Here’s the blurb: The year is 2003, and in the shadow of the Zagros mountains in Iraq, a military unit comes under fire from Iraqi forces. The resulting firefight causes a heavy tremor, opening up a rift in the earth that swallows both sides, causing soldiers to fall into the ruins of a buried Sumerian temple....

In it, we can see several features we can expect to come to the game, as well as a basic description of what it’ll actually be. The Division: Heartland will be a “free-to-play survival-action multiplayer shooter” according to the store listing. Set in middle America, the game will have a PvEvP mission type called Storm Operations, which has 45 players take part in a battle against “A group of dangerous rogue agents, an aggressive faction known as The Vultures, all while surviving a lethal virus”....

The Division 2 is currently on sale for 85% off on Ubisoft’s own Uplay store. All of the game’s different versions, from standard to Ultimate, are down to their lowest prices ever. The 85% off deal is valid on the PC version, purchased directly from Uplay. You can also get the PS4 or Xbox One standard edition for 80% off through he same promo. This brings the price down to $9 for standard, $15 for Gold, and just $18 for Ultimate....
