Caustic, who hasn’t traditionally been one of the more popular heroes in the battle royale game, has enjoyed something of a renaissance in Apex Legends Season 8. With some new balance changes that went live with a recent update, he’s now the character with the highest win-rate in games that last over 20 minutes (which is, let’s be honest, most of them). During the Reddit AMA held by Respawn to celebrate the launch of Season 8 (which goes by the name Mayhem), one player outlined their displeasure with the newly beefed-up toxic madman....

Epic Games said earlier today it would provide details on the first big Fortnite event of the year, and it has: it’s called Love and War. Love and War is a new community-made Search and Destroy LTM. In it, teams of six will play up to 11 rounds. Win six rounds and you will achieve “total victory.” The goal for Attackers is to destroy the bombsite, while Defenders will try to protect the bombsite....

We’re cheating a little bit this week by featuring news from last week as well as this one, which should hopefully make up for skipping a week. As always, we have a full section dedicated to games you can play this weekend rather than just watch trailers for. We’re not going to cover it here, but Ghostrunner just got a free Steam demo. We featured Ghostrunner in a previous episode, so definitely check out the demo while you can....

Crystal Dynamics recently promised to reveal what’s coming next to Marvel’s Avengers, following reports of the game’s dwindling player base and fading interest. Today, the developer has delivered, with a patch 1.3.3 that’s out now on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Stadia. This major update adds SHIELD Substation Zero as a new outpost, and introduces Tachyon Rift missions. Substation Zero can be found in the Pacific Northwest, and it’s where you’ll meet new characters....

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition is probably one of the worst kept secrets in gaming at the moment, but it’s nice to have confirmation. “For many months now, our team at BioWare has been hard at work updating the textures, shaders, models, effects, and technical features of three enormous games,” says the blog post. “Our goal was not to remake or reimagine the original games, but to modernize the experience so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form....

The 2022 Call of Duty, which saw leaks about the drug cartel-focused story over a month ago, will also feature loss of limbs and more realistic gore than has been previously seen in the franchise, with characters reacting to things happening in the game in a more believable way: “During high-intensity moments, your character will react accordingly. Throughout an ambush sequence where your patrol vehicle is under attack from hostile fire, the character you’re playing as is visibly shaken up: struggling to insert the magazine, trembling hands…” In a separate report, VGC revealed the possible cross-promotion between Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone, with a new map reportedly on the way inspired by the new game and consist of “various classic points of interest”....

That trend has been changing for a while now, of course, but Modern Warfare 2 appears to have taken things to new heights on PC this year. On Steam, Modern Warfare 2 has been - and continues to be - among the platform’s weekly top sellers. There was little chance it wasn’t going to be a hit at launch, but we now have the hard numbers to prove it. The game attracted a staggering 238,522 concurrent players at its peak several hours ago....

The game sells itself as an ‘immersive third-person exploration and puzzle game’ set on a peculiar island inhabited by weird and wonderful creatures. As per the developer – a one-person operation from V. Aalbertsberg – the game features a unique narrative style, which is exclusively delivered via exploration, environment, and visual storytelling. “Mona is an immersive third-person exploration and puzzle game set on an eerie island filled with fantastic creatures,” says a brief blurb for the title over on its Steam page....

Capcom announced that Free Title Update 4 will release on February 7, and brings with it new foes alongside new Anomaly Research content, Event Quests, and new paid DLC. Velkhana, the elusive Elder Dragon that debuted as the flagship monster of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, has been spotted by the scouts of Elgado Outpost. The monster glaciates the ambient water in the air, and is capable of forming pillars of ice when engaged in combat....

However, it’s not as easy to lay your hands on as more common metals and minerals like Iron, since it’s a rare drop from an already limited pool of gathering hubs. Despite its rarity, Machalite Ore is one of the most useful early mineral materials in the game, forming an integral part of many different pieces of equipment. Where is the Daimyo Hermitaur location? The initial quest to defeat the Daimyo Hermitaur takes place in the Shrine Ruins, but after that, you can find it in the Sandy Plains, Jungle, and Flooded Forest areas. It’s normally a five-star threat level monster, so make sure to prepare accordingly. Daimyo Hermitaur attack patterns The Daimyo Hermitaur has a few recognizable attacks and two particularly dangerous ones. Waterblight attack The crab spews a long line of water and moves sideways....

What is Ultimas Crystal in Monster Hunter Rise? Ultimas Crystal is a material you can only find at Master Rank levels, so if you go scouring the Lava Caverns looking for it before then, you won’t find any. And you don’t really need it before Master Rank anyways, so it all works out nicely. Ultimas Crystal is a rarer ore and shows up with a pink-ish purple icon. That means you have a higher chance of finding them from white mining outcrops, but we’ve found a fair few from the blue outcrops in Rise’s original areas too....

He’s far from mentally stable, for reasons beyond his control, but that doesn’t stop his path from being disturbing....

So in the latest trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of Tekken – Tekken: Bloodline – when I see King doing his trademark Lasso Kick and smash Jin’s head in, I’m hyped. I’m thinking “wow, OK, this might be a Netflix anime that doesn’t totally undermine its source material”. Except, it probably will. But that’s fine, because Tekken is big, dumb, and full of fun, anyway – Netflix running with its over-the-top violence, fan-service, and intergenerational trauma is fine....

The new trailer shows off a few more features in the curious game, particularly detailing how the kit itself works, and how you can customize tracks to fit in your own home. In order to play the game effectively, Nintendo recommends you have an area of about 12’ x 10’ available to you. You will need to place down four gates and drive through them in order to create a course for yourself and others to play in....

In the video, Howard is joined by design director Emil Pagliarulo, lead quest designer Will Shen, and lead artist Istvan Pely. The team talks about how companions have been improved, and how you will be joined by a companion robot named VASCO, which will make off the cuff comments about something you’re looking at or something that just happened. The team also discusses the various factions in the game, and how you can join whichever one you fancy....

Nintendo and Sony have both had strong and important years. On Sony’s side, it has just launched the PS5 which would be huge for any company. However, it was also bolstered by high profile first-party releases like The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima. Nintendo, on the other hand, has had a quieter year for releases, with mostly Animal Crossing: New Horizons flying the flag. Yet, the console has posted exceptional numbers each month as it invited more players to its family....

As part of a corporate policy briefing on the fiscal year ending March 2021, Nintendo offered a few updates on its business, and plans for the remainder of the fiscal year. Nintendo Switch Online, the company’s paid online service, has now amassed over 26 million paid subscribers as of September. Switch Online is exclusive to Switch, and is required to play games online, similar to PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold....

Nintendo has this morning shared an update on Switch unit sales. As part of the company’s first quarter earnings [PDF] reveal, Nintendo said that the hybrid console has now sold over 89.4 million units since launch. In the three months ended June 30, 4.45 million units were sold. The figures include the Switch’s various versions, meaning the main model as well as the Switch Lite. As we’ve come to expect, Nintendo also shared some updated sales of its most popular first-party titles....

Darkness in the Capital provides Nioh 2 players with new storylines, new bosses and Yokai, new Guardian Spirits, skills, Ninjutsu, Onmyo Magic and Soul Cores. Players can also expect new sets and a weapon “fans of hand-to-hand combat will surely relish.” Storywise, the expansion focuses on the history of the Sohayamaru as the protagonist heads to Kyoto City. Here, the player discovers a shrine featuring an old box. When inspected, the Sohayamaru shines and takes the player back to the Heian Period....
