Resident Evil Village was the most popular game on PS5 for the month of May on the PlayStation Store in both the US and Europe. In second place in the US was Returnal and over in Europe, it was FIFA 21. MLB The Show 21 was third in the US, while Returnal took the slot in Europe. On PS4, Rust Console Edition was the top download in the US, and in Europe, the top game was Resident Evil Village....

It seems Returnal developer Housemarque accidentally shipped the game with a number of active cheats. Cheat commands and debug codes are used in game development all the time, for the purposes of rapid testing and fine-tuning. Usually, however, they are only known to developers. Without a way for players to enter them into the finished game, they remain a secret. Not the case in Returnal, apparently, as YouTube user TheRandomizer discovered this week....

This video takes a deeper dive into Returnal’s story and focuses on Selene’s piecing together everything through death, rebirth, and scouting missions. The story follows Selene, an ASTRA deep-space scout who goes against orders to travel to the alien planet Atropos to follow the “White Shadow” broadcast signal. Upon arrival, she crashes into an alien forest and discovers the ruins of an alien civilization filled with statues, gates, xeno-tech, and alien corpses....

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) has leaked a remasted version of Saints Row: The Third. The rating handed down notes it is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One (via Eurogamer). Of course, THQ Nordic has yet to announce a remaster of the game, so it looks like the ESRB has spoiled the surprise. The game was originally released in 2011 for last-gen consoles and PC, before heading to Nintendo Switch last year....

Developer Sperasoft is behind the remaster, reworking the environments, character models, visual effects, and adding enhanced graphics and a new lighting engine. “Every weapon has been remodelled,” reads a statement from publisher Deep Silver, “every car has been redesigned and a vast proportion of the city has been retextured.” “With around 4,000 assets reworked, the complete update has been expertly handled by Sperasoft. It has transformed environments, character models and visual effects, enhanced graphics and incorporated a new lighting engine....

Saints Row: The Third Remastered will arrive for the consoles on May 25. It is also coming to Steam and GOG this week on May 22. On the new consoles, you can expect the game to run at greater performance settings equivalent to the PC edition at High settings. Visually the game’s engine is now able to run at a much higher performance, bringing improvements to lighting, texture resolution, and other visual effects....

The voice of Sonic the Hedgehog has announced his departure from the role. Yesterday, Roger Craig Smith took to Twitter to say – in rather vague terms – that he was no longer voicing the super-fast blue hedgehog. He started giving life to Sonic in 2010, primarily in video games but also in the Sonic Boom animated show and various cameos, including Wreck-it Ralph and its 2018 sequel. “Welp, 10 years was an amazing run,” he said....

Following reports of a Japanese retailer advising customers that several PS4 models won’t be restocked, Sony’s Japanese arm has seemingly confirmed that this indeed the case in the country. In fact, according to Game Watch, Sony will only be restocking the PS5 Jet Black 500GB, which is the slim model that also happens to be the cheapest. All other models, including the various PS4 Pro editions, will no longer be manufactured, meaning they’re completely gone once current stock runs out....

This would see subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium receiving demos of all major titles. According to sources speaking with Game Developer, studios creating games that are lower cost will not be required to create trials. The report states that developers were not formally informed of the new policy, instead, the information came from an update made to Sony’s developer portal. With the new policy, this means that studios developing upcoming games will need to put forth the budget, effort, and time into creating these trials....
